The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) recently honored the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation for its work in protecting and improving more than 600,000 acres of wildlife habitat in the United States and Canada. The Foundation has expended more than $12 million on behalf of wildlife since 1984.
“This award provides recognition for the many dedicated and selfless individuals and organizations whose grassroots activities serve to further the international efforts of UNEP to safeguard the environmental destiny of the Earth and all of its inhabitants,” said Richard A. Hellman, president of the U.S. Committee for UNEP.
Established in 1973, UNEP is an agency headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, which helps nationals, non-governmental groups and other UN agencies worldwide protect the environment by distributing educational materials and by serving as a coordinator and catalyst for environmental initiatives. The U.S. Committee for the UNEP is a private, nonprofit organization established to support the critical work done by UNEP. It was formed in 1984.
“This award demonstrates that the Foundation’s reputation is growing and that our work on behalf of wildlife is being noticed even in international circles,” said RMEF executive director Bob Munson. “All of our members deserve tremendous credit for this achievement.”
